Tate Britain opened in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, but became commonly known as the Tate Gallery. It had survived multiple crises during its existence including bomb damage during World War II. Since the launch of Tate Modern in 2000, Tate Britain now only displays historical and contemporary British art only.
